I have not found where William died. After Matilda died, I do not know what happened to the little family. I know by 1910 his grandsons are both married.
Wallace is working as a Merchant Seaman, and Maurice is married and still on the family farm. I assume he stayed with the boys in Catawba, but so far, searching the Ohio Death records page by page for 1902 and 1903 has not revealed any clues. I have also checked for deaths in Indiana, where his son George was, and Michigan and Wisconsin, where he and Gertrude lived. Most of the family is buried in Catawba Cemetery, I think if he died there he would have been buried there. I begin to suspect he took his boat out on the lake and his body was not recovered.
1903 Dead Hoags: He is NOT the William Hoag that died in Troy, Indiana. I sent for that death certificate, that Hoag was 5 years old. He is NOT either of the William Hoags that died in Michigan, have reviewed their trees. He is NOT the William Hoag that is buried in Berlinville, Ohio.
Update: The fisherman Darius Hoag I was tracking in New York was the son of Stephen Hoag and Elizabeth Southworth. It does look like William's parents are Stephen Allen Hoag and Hannah Cady, Stephen's second wife. The birth place, month and year of their son William and my William match perfectly. I have 3 DNA matches to descendants of Stephen and Hannah. Not enough for proof positive, yet. I have been in touch with John Hoyt, who runs the Hoyt family website for more information on Stephen and Hannah, he has pointed me to a book "Hoag Ancestry" by Mrs Julia H. Quackenbush, published 1938-1949.
I also want to mention that John Hoyt had suggested Stephen and Hannah to me back in Nov. 2017, but I wanted to find another connection and eliminate other possibilities. Thank You John!

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
