Biography

John Floyd Hoard was born January 23, 1894, in Des Moines, Iowa. He is the son of Oscar Hoard and Idella Purcell.[1]

Oscar got a job as a mattressmaker at Schmitt & Henry Manufacturing Company. He appears to have stayed with them until he died.[2][3]

Lowell Vetus Hoard was born January 14, 1897, in Des Moines.

Floyd was 6 when the 1900 Census was taken. He lived with his brother and their parents.[7][8]

Floyd was 9 when his father died March 8, 1904. His father was mowing his ditch when his tractor rolled over on him. Oscar was buried in Woodland Cemetery, Des Moines.[1][12][13]

In the 1910 Census (April 22, 1910), Floyd (16) was listed at home with his mother, brother and Aunt(?).[14]

Idella (37) married David Baillie (45) May 6, 1910, in Des Moines. David was a farmer in Trayer(sp), Iowa, and this was his first marriage. Jesse Ranous filed the affidavit. Idella's sister-in-law and her husband, Olga and George Ruhmland, were the witnesses. The service was performed by A. C. Douglas, Minister.[15]

David Baillie adopted Floyd and Lowell Hoard who were Baillies from then on.

Floyd enlisted in the Army December 10, 1917, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He trained at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri; Camp Grant, Illinois; Camp Hancock, Georgia; Camp Merritt, New Jersey. He left Hoboken, New Jersey, on April 3, 1918, arriving in Brest, France, on April 17.

Château-Thierry, Aisne, France

Floyd trained in the area around Château-Thierry. He was assigned to Company G, 7th Infantry, 3rd Division.

Floyd was sent to the front and involved in the battles of Belleau Wood (June 10-18) and Château-Thierry (July 8-14). Floyd was wounded by multiple gunshot wounds in the stomach, right hip, left side and leg. The third division was cited for bravery and Floyd was awarded the purple heart. He was sent to the Evacuation Hospital July 17-26, on to Neaux Chateau on July 27, Bordeaux on August 29 and St. Nazaire from September 19 to October 11. He was sent home October 12 arriving at Newport News October 21. He was discharged from Camp Dodge in Iowa later that day.

Floyd (37) married Marie Bamford (31) on March 1, 1932, in Colo, Iowa, where Marie was from. It was Marie's first marriage. Belle B. Thompson and Ella B. Bamford (Marie's mom) were witnesses. They were married by Marie's father, J. M. Bamford, Evangelical Minister.

Floyd Baillie was Polk County Treasurer for many years.

Floyd Baillie died December 13, 1980, in Des Moines. He was buried in Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.[24]
