Biography

Sir Henry Hobart was the son of Thomas Hobart, and Audrey Hare, and the great-grandson of Sir James Hobart of Monks Eleigh, Suffolk, England, who served as Attorney General during the reign of King Henry VII.
The birth year of 1553 in Little Plumstead, Norfolk cannot be confirmed by the baptismal record, as the parish registers of Little Plumstead started in 1559.

Henry was admitted to Lincoln's Inn, London on 10 August 1575 to study law. He was called to the bar in 1584, and subsequently become Governor of Lincoln Inn in 1591.

He was a Member of Parliament for St. Ives, Norfolk between 1588 and 1589, for Yarmouth, Norfolk in 1597 and 1601, and for Norwich from 1604 to 1611. ^[1] Sir Henry Hobart was Steward of Norwich in 1595, made Sergeant from 1603 to 1606, and latter served as Attorney for the Court of Wards in 1605, and Attorney General for England and Wales. Sir Henry was elevated to Chief justice of the Court of Common Pleas, and having been Lord Chancellor to Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, he was also Chancellor and Lord keeper of the Great Seal to Charles, Prince of Wales.

Sir Henry was knighted in 1603.

On 23 May 1609, he was a signatory of the Second Charter of the Virginia Company as both and investor and part of the Council for the "Companie of Adventurers and Planters in Virginia" responsible for administering the Company's affairs in London. ^[2] Henry did not travel to Virginia himself.

He was created "Baronet Hobart of Intwood in the County of Norfolk" on 22 May 1611. (Intwood was his primary estate at that time, as he did not purchase Blickling until 1616). ^[3]

On April 21, 1590 ^[4] Sir Henry married Dorothy Bell, the daughter of Sir Robert Bell, in Blickling, Norfolk .

Death and Burial

Sir Henry Hobart's death and burial is recorded in the parish register of Blickling, Norfolk. The image on Family Search is blurred but the date of death is clearly visible as 29 December 1625. ^[5] The History of Parliament ^[1] and Venn's Cambrindge Alumni ^[6] both give his death date as 26 December. Unfortunately the Bishop's Transcript for that year has not survived. He was buried at Blickling church on 4 January 1625/6.

Will and Legacy

Sir Henry left an extensive will first written on 20 July 1625 with a codicil added on 23 September 1625. The will was proved at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury at London on 7 March 1625/6. ^[7]

He named his eldest surviving son, Sir John Hobart as his son and heir. In order, the rest of the surviving sons were:

• Thomas
• Robert
• Edward
• Henry

The last four were under the age of twenty one and provision had been made for their support.

Sir Henry had two surviving daughters, Elizabeth and Frances. Both were unmarried and provision was made for their marriage portions.

The will names some (but not all) of his lands and property in England.
There is no mention of any land in Virginia or any other place outside England.
There is no mention made of ownership, or interest in, any ship.
