Ellen (Hobbs) Welty is one of twins.

Eleanor Martha Hobbs, one of at least 11 children of John Hobbs (1801-1879) and Eleanor Devilbiss (1799-1888), was born in Emmitsburg, Frederick County, Maryland, on 8 September 1836.[1][2] She lived in Emmitsburg her entire life.

John Hobbs, Eleanor's father, was included in the 1840 census of Emmitsburg. The family comprised of John and his wife Eleanor, along with 11 children (6 boys and 5 girls). [3]

There were nine children—all born in Maryland including Eleanor—still living on the family farm (valued at $2,500 or $2.6 million in 2021)[4] in Emmitsburg when the 1850 census was taken:[5]

Eleanor married James M Welty in about 1855, most likely in Frederick, Maryland, where they were both living. No record of the marriage has been located.

James and Ellen, as she was known, had 2 children by the time the 1860 census of Emmitsburg was taken. They were living next door to Franklin Welty and his family who was James' first cousin.[6]

The 1870 census entry for the family has not been found.

The United States Census, 1880[7] found James M Welty, a 50 year old married white male, born in Maryland to a father born in Maryland and a mother born in Virginia, living in Emmittsburg, Frederick County, Maryland. With him were his wife Ellen and their nine children. James, the father, worked as a farmer; Mary, Clara, and Ida worked as housekeepers; John worked as a farm laborer. Under "how many months unemployed during the Census year", Mary and Ida said 6 months and Clara said 1. John, Charles, James, and Anna had attended school in the previous year.

Ellen was widowed in 1900, sometime after then she went to live with her married daughter (Anna) Rose in Emmitsburg, and she was with the family in 1910 [8]

Ellen died in Emmitsburg on 5 May 1918, and was buried in Saint Josephs Cemetery, Emmitsburg, Frederick County [1]
