Biography

Anne Hobbs has only been estimated to have been born before 1670 in Richmond County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Richard Hobbs and Mary Meades. She first married to Richard Greene, and as his widow, to John Branham.

Her relation to her mother is proven by Richmond County deed records which make clear that Anne had inherited a landed estate once belonging to her grandfather Thomas Meades and bequeathed to his daughter Mary at the death of his widow. A particular deed dated 1 August 1721, wherein John Bramham and Anne sold the 200 acres on which they resided along with 13 slaves to Samuell Godwin, describes this land as being the remaining part of a 700 acre tract sold by William Underwood to Thomas Meads, grandfather of the s'd Anne Branham, which descended unto Anne as heir at law of her mother Mary Hobbs.[1]

Anne's first marriage to Richard Greene is estimated to have occurred by 1683 because Richard Greene was in August of 1683 ordered to take custody and raise a 2 1/2 year old base born daughter of Richard Hobbs, dec'd, until the child was 21 years of age. He officially passed this responsibility to one John Peirce 10 years later.[2][3] [4]

Anne's husband, Richard died before 5 May 1705 when Anne was granted administration of his estate.[5]

-----Upon the Petition of Anne Geene; Order for Admin. is granted to her on all and singual the Estate of Richard Greene, she giving security according to Law.
-----This day Capt. John Craske and Jno: Pound acknowledged themselves indebted unto the Worsppll. her Majties Justices for Richmond County in the full and just summe of two hundred pounds Sterl., to be payd to the said Justices theire Exrs. or Admrs. in case Anne Greene do not duely administer on all and singular the Estate of Richard Greene, deced., & render a true Account thereof when thereunto lawfully called.

The births of Anne's daughters, Winifred, Anne, & Eleanor Green were recorded in the Farnham Parish Register.[6] The parentage of her apparent eldest daughter Esther, who may have been hastily married shortly after the death of Richard Greene, is proven by a deed wherein Anne names her grandson, Francis Gower, a son born to John Gower & wife Hester 2nd February 1706/7. This child was to inherit the land Anne sold to the couple upon the death of his longest lived parent.[7]

  1. Esther Green, b. abt. 1790; d. abt. 1715; m. John Gower.
  2. Winifred Green, b. 19 Dec 1693; d. 20 May 1727; m. 1)10 Nov 1710, Edward Spencer; m. 2) Stanley Gower, brother of John.
  3. Mary Ann Green, b. 17 Jun 1696
  4. Eleanor Green, b. 19 Feb 1702; d. 10 Nov 1722; m. Benjamin Rust.

Richard Greene's will is not found but it appears he may have made one giving Anne his real estate during her widowhood. In addition to the land Anne sold to John & Hester Gower in October, she made a 1 Dec 1714 Deed of Gift to her specified son-in-law Stanley Gower and his wife Winifred, her daughter. On this same day, Richard Branham gave 271 acre Deed of Gift to his son John Branham which was witnessed by Anne's son-in-laws John and Stanley Gower.[8]

1 Dec 1714. Anne (Hobbs) Green for love and affection son-in-law Standley Gower and his wife and her daughter Winefred Gower. Witnesses: John Gower, William Brockenbrough, Richard Bramam.[9]

Anne was married to John Bramham in December of 1714. In 1720 Benjamin Rust filed suit against John and Anne for his wife's share of her father's estate proving he had married Anne's youngest daughter Eleanor Greene.

Richmond County, Virginia Court 4 February 1719/20
Rust vs. Bramham. Judgment is granted Benjamin Rust who marryed Ellinor Green, Daughter of Richard Green, late of this county, deced., against John Bramham and Ann his Wife, late Ann Green, Admrx of the Estate of the deced., for Ellinor Green’s part of her Father’s Estate as appears by an Inventory upon Record, which is ordered to be paid with costs als eco”
2 Nov. 1720. John and Anne Bramham to Benjamin and Eleanor [Greene] Rust. Eleanor is named as Anne’s daughter. Witnessed by Samuel Godwin and Thomas Thornton. Land is part of Anne’s inheritance.[10]

The death of Anne Bramham was recorded in the North Farnham Parish Register 27 December 1726.[11]

I've made an adjustment to Anne's estimated birth/marriage year based upon the added source of Richard Greene being appointed in 1683 to raise a 2 1/2 year old base born daughter of Richard Hobbs, deceased.

I am about to change the death date, which currently says "Died after 4 Apr 1728 after about age 60 in Richmond, Colony of Virginia." A comment I just posted on a duplicate profile that needs to be merged with this one provides the reasoning. It also appears that "after 4 Apr 1728" might have been speculation based on the date that power of attorney and a deed were recorded involving Richard Bramham, who was not Anne's husband, as has been established here by Honi Kleine.

Her name was not Mary or Mary Ann. The application of this extra name appears to stem from confusion with another couple in King George County, named John & Mary Bramham, who sold land in Richmond County to Thomas Moxley in 1729/30. [Richmond DB8, pp. 520-522] This could not have been the same John Bramham/Branham or his wife, Ann (Hobbs/Green), because Ann's 27 Dec 1726 death was recorded in the North Farnham Parish Register on page B-9, and John's 16 Mar 1726/7 marriage to Rachel Gower (widow of Francis) was recorded on page 189 of the same register. John and Rachel were both still alive and still married as late as 1740, when they deeded rights to Rachel's dower land to Benjamin Rust. [Richmond DB9, pp. 633-634]

Hobbs-3023 and Hobbs-1477 appear to represent the same person because: There is a lot wrong with this profile, but the attached husbands are clearly the husbands of Hobbs-1477. The profiles need to be merged, and the Issue section needs to be moved or removed. It appears to belong in her daughter's profile.

This source needs to be on this profile. It proves Anne Green, who's daughter Eleanor Green has a birth record, married JOHN Branham rather than Richard Branham. Also, see the profile of Richard Branham who's wife named Ann relinquish her dower right in 1709.

Per the pending merges...this Anne (Hobbs?) Green cannot be the wife Ann of Richard Branham because Anne, the widow of Richard Green, and her husband JOHN Branham gave a deed of gift to Benjamin Rust & his wife Eleanor (Green), specified as the daughter of John Branham's wife Anne Branham and that deed is dated 2 Nov 1720. (11 years after Richard Branham first appears in a deed (now on his profile) with his wife Ann, meaning he was married to an Ann from 1709 until his death in 1728) Here is the John Branham/Rust deed.

Here is another deed from John Branham and wife Anne same location if she ever gets her connected to John Branham. I have placed a deed of Richard Branham with wife Deborah selling land in this same location in 1693 which surely indicates a relationship between these two men. 1 Nov 1720 Deeds of Lease & Release from John Branham to Lewis Pugh, 50 acres bounding s'd Branham's lines in Farnham Parish Richmond County on branches of the Tutoske & now in possession of Lewis Pugh.
