John Henry Hockridge was born about 1836 and baptised on 16th March 1836 at Kilkhampton, Cornwall, England. He was the son of John Hockridge and Mary Mountjoy.[1]

John was living at home with his parents, at Illcombe, for the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

Sometime before 1861, John had emigrated to Canada[citation needed] and married Elizabeth Ann Peate[citation needed]. [4]

John and Elizabeth Hockridge had at least three children.

  1. Lucretia Hockridge b. 1861
  2. Mary Elizabeth Hockridge b. 1863
  3. William Hockridge b. 1866

In 1871, John, Elizabeth and the three children were living in Bradford, West Gwillimbury, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. John's younger brother, Thomas Granville was with them studying medicine and Elizabeth's brother, Richard Peate was also with them.

John Henry Hockridge died on 1st September 1900 at Bradford, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada.[7] He was buried at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Bradford.[8]

Research Notes

John Henry Hockridge's profile has been completely rewritten after the Canadian census results revealed his whereabouts. Previously had John marrying Mary Crewes, but this has turned out to be the wrong John Hockridge. There were a few of them around at the time! The extra evidence of John's brother, Thomas Granville being with him in 1871 and then his daughter, Lucretia McKay, being with Thomas Granville, back in England for the 1881 Census and Lucretia being listed as Thomas's niece, born in Bradford, Ontario solved the mystery beyond doubt.

I can find no record of John's emigration to Canada on the Familysearch website and no record of his marriage to Elizabeth Ann Peat on Familysearch or UKFreeBMD website. They appear to have married in Canada.
