It has been our painful duty of late to record the deaths of a number of of settlers. Still another old colonist has passed away in the person of Mr. Thomas Riches Hodder, whose decease took place on Saturday evening at the advanced age of 85 years.
Mr. Hodder came to Nov Zealand in the barque Ashmore in the year 1854. He made his home in Nelson, where he resided for about 40 years, successfully engaging in business. After living in Canterbury for several years, he came to Taranaki where he has remained ever since.
Mr. Hodder was a strong man in every sense of the word, being beloved and respected by all who knew him. He took an especial delight in all religious work, and any movement that had for its objective, the uplifting of the people.
He leaves a family of eight children to mourn his loss - Mrs J. G. Harkness of Wellington: Mrs J. Sraythe of Christchurch; Mrs T. S. Malcolm of Gisborne; Mrs Brownlee of Sydney; Miss Hodder of New Plymouth; Mr T. R. Hodder of Palmerston North; Mr W. R. Hodder of London; Mr N. Hodder of Christchurch. Besides these, he leaves twenty-eight grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Mr Hodder is the last surviving member of a large family, his younger brother, Mr M.H. Hodder of the well-known firm of Hodder and Stoughton of London, having predeceased him only last year.
