Biography

Elizabeth Hodge was born about 1799 in Stirling, Stirling, Scotland.^[1][2]

On 19 Jul 1818 she married Alexander Johnston (or Johnstone) in Stirling, Stirling, Scotland. (Banns were also read in St. Ninians on 17 Jul 1818.)^[3]

On 7 Jun 1841 Alexander and Elizabeth were residing at Bannockburn in St. Ninians, Stirling, Scotland.^[4]

Alexander predeceased her before 1851.

On 31 Mar 1851 she was residing at Bannockburn in St. Ninians, Stirling, Scotland with six daughters and two grandchildren.^[1]

On 7 Apr 1861 she was residing at Bannockburn in St. Ninians, Stirling, Scotland, with one daughter and one grandchild. Her occupation was (Wool) Winder.^[5]

On 2 Apr 1871 she was residing at Old Road Haugh, Bannockburn, St. Ninians, Stirling, Scotland, with one daughter and two grandchildren. Her occupation was Wool Winder.^[6]

She died 3 Dec 1879 at Bannockburn in St. Ninians, Stirling, Scotland.^[2]

Research Notes

Census records consistently list her birthdate and birthplace as ~1798-99 in Stirling parish, but unable to locate a matching baptism record. Her death record lists her as 81 years old, which is consistent with a late 1798 birthdate.

Her death record lists her parents as Andrew Hodge and Helen Reid. Unable to locate any BMD records for them on ScotlandsPeople.

To Do: Identify the mothers of the two grandsons living with her in the 1851 census: William McPherson and Alexander Marshall.
