Biography

Jessie Hodge was born on the 23rd of April 1888 in Tilework Cottage, Quarter, Parish of Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland to Parents Alexander Hodge, Coal Miner and Mary Hodge, maiden surname Kain [1].

Alexander Hodge, Coal Miner married and Mary Kain on the 14th of July 1871 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland [2]. They had 6 children, including Jessie, namely, Christina born 1871 [3], Stephen, born 1873 [4], James, born 1875 [5], Alexander, born 1880 [6] and William, born 1883 [7].

Her Mother, Mary Hodge, maiden surname Kain, died aged 48 years in Hamilton in 1895 [8].

Her Father Alexander Hodge married Agnes McIvor in 1896 [9] and as an act of that union they had a Son, James McIvor Hodge [10].

Her Father Alexander Hodge died aged 59 years in Hamilton in 1903 [11].

Jessie Hodge married George Stirrat on 31st of December 1908, at 13 Store Row, Quarter, Parish of Hamilton. [12].

They had two children as an act of their union, Barbara Stirrat born on the 15th of March 1909 at Millburn Row, Dalserf, Lanarkshire, Scotland [13] and Mary Cain Stirrat born on the 18h of February 1911 at Red Row, Dalserf, Lanarkshire, Scotland [14].

The 1911 Census [15] shows the George & Jessie Stirrat’s Family residing at N°48 Dunlop Place, Over Dalserf, Dalserf, Lanarkshire, Scotland, with George Stirrat, aged 26 years, head of the family, Jessie Stirrat, aged 23 years, his Wife and Daughters Barbara Stirrat, aged 2 years and Mary Stirrat aged 1 month.

Her Husband, George Stirrat died aged 27 years on the 27th May 1912 at Edinburgh Infirmary, Edinburgh, Scotland from a fracture to the base of skull, cerebral haemorrhage and cardiac failure following a mining accident [16]. His usual address was listed as Abercorn Place, Edinburgh, Scotland.

His death and that of his work colleague George Feeney is recorded in the Scottish Mining Fatal Accident Index 1912 [17]. The death was reported in Linlithgowshire Gazette Newspaper dated Friday 31st May 1912, page 5, 341 words [18].

Jessie Stirrat, maiden surname Hodge married John Stewart Weir on the 27th of February 1920 at their home address of 158 Almada Street, Hamilton [19]. The Marriage Certificate shows Jessie Stirrat, maiden surname Hodge as the widow of George Stirrat. At the time of their marriage John Stewart Weir was 44 years old and Jessie Weir formerly Stirrat, maiden surname Hodge was 31 years old. As an act of their union they had a Son Alexander Burns Weir, born in 1920 [20] and a Daughter Elizabeth Stewart Weir born in 1930 [21] who died in 1931, aged 1 years old [22].

John Stewart Weir died aged 59 years on 29 March 1935 at 158 Almada Street, Hamilton. The signature on his death certificate is Archibald Hutchison, Son-in-Law [23].

Jessie Weir formerly Stirrat, maiden surname Hodge died aged 55 years on 9 February 1944 at 101 Almada Street, Hamilton. The signature on her death certificate is Alex B. Weir, Son. Alexander Burns Weir born in Hamilton, in 1920 [24].

She is buried at the West Cemetery, Hamilton [25] along with her Husband John Stewart Weir [26], Son Alexander Weir [27] and Daughter Elizabeth Weir known as Betty[28].
