Biography

John Hodge was born in England.
Flag of Devon (adopted 2003)
John Hodge was born in Devon, England.

John Hodge was baptised on the 14th of March 1755 in Witheridge, Devon, England[1][2]. He was the son of William and Anne.

John married Meldred Crook on the 14th of June 1779 in Witheridge[3][4]. The couple were both of the parish of Witheridge and were married by banns. The wedding was witnessed by Henry Hodge (John's brother) and Andrew Commins. John and Meldred had 2 children together, both sons:

  • John Hodge, baptised on the 30th of May 1784 in Witheridge.
  • Richard Hodge, baptised on the 15th of April 1787 in Witheridge.

Earlier in 1779, Meldred had given birth to a daughter out of wedlock. Mary Crook was baptised on the 7th of March 1779 in Witheridge. It is probable that John was also the father of this earlier child as he and Meldred were wed only a few months after her birth.

His sons' baptism records note that John was a day labourer and an almsperson.

John's wife, Meldred, passed away in 1820.

John was buried on the 27th of November 1831 in Witheridge[5].

Research Notes

According to his burial record he was 79 years old when he died, giving a birth year of around 1752.
