Biography

Joseph Hodges was born about 1780 in Surry County, North Carolina. On 11 Sep 1803, he married Mary Noblitt in Surry County.[1] Joseph and Mary had 9 children:

Asa, b. 1804, d. 1865; married Clarry Dudley[2][3]
Rebecca, b. abt. 1810[2]
Lydia, b. 1812, d. bef. 1890; married Jesse Riggs[2][4][5]

Joseph and his family were living in Surry County in 1810, 1820, and 1830.[12][13][14] Joseph died in 1841 in Surry County.[15]

Last Will & Testament of Joseph Hodges

July 4th 1841
Be it remembered that I Joseph Hodges of the county and state aforsaid being of perfect mind and memory do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following That is to say First after my decease that all my just debts be paid. Secondly I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Mary Hodges all my Estate both real and personal to do with as she pleases as long as she lives (except one horse worth seventy five dollars one bed and furnature one cow and calf to my son Meredith Hodges, provided he marries and leaves his mother). Thirdly if any of my daughters should marry I will that they have as much of my estate as my beloved daughters viz. Lydia Riggs & Eliza Nations have received of me. Fourthly that my daughters who remain single at the death of their mother to have all the land that I am in possession of for a home for them as long as they remain single. Fifthly I will that all my household and kitchen furnature which my beloved wife dies possessed of to be equally divided amongst my seven daughters viz. Rebecca Hodges, Lydia Riggs, Nancy Hodges, Eliza Nations, Mary Hodges, Sarah Hodges, & Caroline Hodges. Sixthly I will that my son Meredith after the death of his mother and marriage or death of my five above named daughters to have all the land that I am now in possession of. Seventhly that all the stock be that remaining of the decease of my beloved wife to be equally divided amongst all my children that is Asa Hodges, Meredith Hodges, Rebecca Hodges, Lydia Riggs, Eliza Nations, Nancy Hodges, Mary Hodges, Sara Hodges and Caroline Hodges. Eighthly I do appoint for my Exectors my son Asa Hodges & Jesse Riggs in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this day and year above written signed sealed and acknowledged in presents of Silas Jones, Thos M Sharp

Research Note

There is considerable confusion in Ancestry trees between this Joseph Hodges of Surry County and Joseph Hodge of Rowan County, who lived during the same period. They are two different people.
