Albert B. Hodges was born in (perhaps) 1861,[1][2][3][4] in Nashville, Tennessee, son of Samuel Hodges and Evelyn Bird.[5] He died in Staten Island, New York, in 1944.[6][7] He is buried in Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island, NY (Findagrave.com).
A chess master. He was New York State champion, 1892-94, and U.S. champion, 1894-96. He withdrew from national competition without defending his title, since travel for tournament play conflicted with his "day job" as chief administrator of Sailor's Snug Harbor, a community for retired seamen, Staten Island. But he remained an elite player on an amateur basis and "continued to bear one of the great names in chess history for many years." (NYT obituary)[7]. Indeed he remains "one of the better-known American chess masters of the late 19th century".[8] A cover story in The Chess Review on his 80th birthday recalled his accomplishments.[4] His matches continue to be studied today.[3][2][9]

↑ Sources cited give birth as 21 July 1861. But marriage record and obituary have year as 1862, and grave as 1863. There seems to be no direct record of birth. The day is supported by a diary of niece Grace Robinson (Diary 1910, entry for 7/21/1912, p. [128].)
