Obituaries

DEATH OF A WELL KNOWN ASHTON TRADESMAN - On Friday morning the death of Mr John Hodgkinson took place at his residence, Ashton File Works where for a period of 43 years as the senior partner of John Hodgkinson & Bros. he had won the esteem of all with whom he had been brought into business contact, and by dint of hard work and perseverance, combined with honest integrity, built up a reputation, conjointly with the firm, second to none for Lancashire steel files. He was also a well-known member of the Oddfellows' Society M.U. having filled the office of Prov. C.S. for the Ashton in Makerfield (sic) for a period of over forty years, being at the time of hid death the oldest C.S. in the Unity, and has on several occasiomns represented his District at the Annual Movable Committees of the Order.[1]

It is with deep regret that we have to record the death of Provisional Corresponding Secretary John Hodgkinson which took place April 14th at the age of 75. He was initiated a member of the Triumphant Lodge on November 2nd 1839 and at once began to take an interest in the work of Oddfellowship, making it his favourite hobby and study. His remains were accompanied to their last resting place in the churchyard of St Thomas, Ashton-in-Makerfield, by representative members of the various lodges in the district, and a special feature was the attendance of a goodly number of the Sunday School teachers and senior scholars connected with the Cave Brown Institute of the Church Association, with which the deceased had been very closely identified since its formation. He had filled the office of Prov. C.S. for 48 years having been appointed in 1845 and ranked as one of the oldest C.S.'s in the Unity. On several occasions he represented the district at the A.M.C. As a token of the high esteem in which he was held throughout the district, it is proposed to erect a suitable commemorative memorial.[2]
