MOTOR CYCLIST KILLED. WANGANUI HERALD, VOLUME L, ISSUE 14572, 8 APRIL 1915 RESULT OF COLLISION WITH TRAP (Per United Press Association.) NAPIER, April 8. A motor-cyclist named Augustus W. Hodgkinson, a,former resident of Masterton and recently, of Havelock North, was killed as the result of a collision with a trap last night. He was riding on the wrong side of the road and swerved over to the left just as he reached the trap, and a terrific impact resulted. Hodgkinson died on the way to the hospital.
FATAL ACCIDENT AT NAPIER HASTINGS STANDARD, VOLUME IV, ISSUE 412, 8 APRIL 1915 MOTOR CYC LIST KILLED. About 5.40 p.m. last evening, just as it was getting dusk, a motor cyclist named Augustus W Hodgkinson, of Masterton, and who was in the employ of Cairns and Paton, contractors, of Havelock North, collided with a horse and trap at the corner of Munroe and Swan street and sustained injuries which resulted in his death some forty minutes later. From the statement made by the driver of the trap (Hubert Hickling, of Clive Grange), Hodgkinson was approaching from the southern end of Munroe street, and seeing that he was on his wrong side he (the driver) pulled up. Just as the horse was about to stop, the motorist, who apparently hesitated, swerved to the left and ran into the horse's legs. Man and machine fell heavily, and though the deceased attempted to rise he lost consciousness, And died while being removed to the hospital." Dr. Johnson had been summoned, and followed the ambulance, subsequently finding life to be extinct. The deceased, who was a middle aged man, showed no signs of outward injury. Over his right breast, however, there was a round soft mark, indicating that the deceased had struck some fairly hard substance, breaking the bones in his chest and probably causing internal haemorrhage. The cycle, which is an old machine of the fixed-engine type, shows signs of having forcibly collided with some object. The steel plates which brace the front fork to the frame are twisted, and the mudguard, footrests and other minor parts are damaged. The machine is in a somewhat neglected state, the brake being badly worn and therefore very hard to apply in an emergency. The motor cyclist had neither lamp nor horn attached to the machine, but carried a whistle tied to a string. The accident occurred about 13 minutes after sunset, and Munroe street, by reason of the fact that one side is shaded by tall bluegums, is very dark. An inquest is being held this afternoon.
