From find a Grave: MRS. WILLIAM LIGHTHILL
Mary Hodgkinson was born in London, England, September 10, 1849, and died at the home of her son, Louis Lighthill, on the farm northeast of Little River, Kansas, December 28, 1928; aged 79 years, 3 months and 18 days.
She came to Quebec, Canada, with her parents, when about three years of age, and soon moved to Alma, Wisconsin, and later to Iowa.
She was united in marriage to William Lighthill in October 1867. To this union six children were born. George Henry died in childhood, and Emma Frances passed away in 1913. Her husband preceded her in death in 1908.
After her marriage she went with her husband to his home in Humboldt, Nebraska, where they lived until 1901 when they moved to their farm northeast of Little River. After the death of her husband she purchased a home in Little River and here she lived until a year ago last August, when she went to visit her daughter in Dawson, Nebr. She was stricken with paralysis while with her daughter and was helpless until her death. Last August her son Louis brought her to his home where she died.
Grandma Lighthill was of a retiring nature, but she lived a devoted Christian life. She was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Little River and was always regular in her attendance until sickness prevented. Her faith in her Lord never wavered and she is at home with her loved ones and friends in the Eternal City of God. Her life was a noble example of patience, never complaining regardless of her feelings or her lot. She had a lovely disposition that radiated her home. She loved the out-of-doors and spent many hours with the flowers, trees and birds. As long as her strength allowed, her home was garden of beauty.
She was a faithful wife and a devoted mother, and a helpful friend. She will be greatly missed by her loved ones and friends.
She leaves to mourn her death two daughters and two sons – Mrs. Demia Jane Clift of Dawson, Nebr., Rebecca Ann Lighthill of Siloam Springs, Ark., William McCandless Lighthill of Claremore, Okla., and Louis Clark Lighthill of Little River, Kans.; twelve grandchildren and other relatives and many friends.
Grandma is gone from us to a better world. We would not call her back to pain and sickness. Rather would we crown her grave with the flowers she loved so well. Few of us will live as long or as well, and fewer yet will the Angel of Death greet with such a loving touch.
Funeral services were conducted from the M. E. Church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon by her pastor, Rev. Chester A. Miles, assisted by Rev. John Spriggs. Interment in Bean cemetery.
