Biography

Jane Hodgkinson was born on 12 Apr 1763, and christened on 29 Apr 1763 at St Mary the Virgin Church in Prescot, Lancashire. She was the daughter of John and Jane Hodgkinson. Her father's occupation was given as attorney at law, and the family's address as Prescot.

Jane married John Barnes on 7 Jan 1786 at Farnworth Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, by licence. John was described as a clerk of Farnworth near Prescot; Jane was a spinster of Farnworth near Prescot. The witnesses were George Greaves and Margaret Marsh.

On December 20 1797, Jane was appointed as one of three administrators of the estate of her brother, Robert. The other two were their half-brother Joseph Hodgkinson and their half-sister Mary Hodkinson, both of Prescot. Jane was described as the wife of the Reverend John Barnes, vicar of Huyton.

Jane's half-brother Joseph Hodgkinson died in 1851. His will was proved on 22 July 1851; he left £1000 apiece to Jane's children. He also left £1000 to Peter Leather, attorney of Liverpool. Peter had married Margaret Barnes in 1821;^[1] presumably Margaret was Jane's daughter.^[2]
