George was born in 1819. He was the son of George Hodgson and Sarah Smith. He passed away in 1895. Left school early and apprenticed to William Crabtree, loom-makers. One of the first students at Bradford Mechanics Institute when it was founded in 1830. Engaged to Ann Ackroyd 2 months before first child born, married when daughter 5 months and then lived with older brother John. Joined his older brother JHS's firm at West End Mill, working as machine maker. Helped invent the High Speed Circular Box Loom - which won many awards and medals and gave significant advantages to their mill. Later, acquired Crabtree's loom factory and business. Using mill profits, he helped Mechanic Institute financially and bought more land from Crabtree and much other land and property (many acres) Helped fund and found Bradford Technical Institute, becoming a council member, and later Treasurer and Vice president of the Institute. Built a new mill (Legrams) and transferred the family business there. Built Iron Works in Whitby, later selling at a large profit. Director and then Vice Chair and Chair of Yorkshire Banking, and on the Council of Bradford Chamber of Commerce and (later Vice Chair). JP. Helped raise money to set up Bradford Technical College (later to become Bradford University). Sent his youngest son George to Rugby school. 1889 bought Nocton Hall (age 70) with 7300 acres for £160,000 from Marquis of Ripon. 1895 Oct Will proved in Wakefield - estate worth £398,451
