Biography

Emma Hodson was born in 1848 in Sandon, Staffordshire, England to Sarah Hodson. Her birth was registered in Stone, Staffordshire in the first quarter of 1849, with no mother's maiden name (indicating an unmarried mother).[1]

Emma Hodson, daughter of Sarah Hodson, was christened on 31 Dec 1848 in Sandon.[2]

In 1851 Emma Hodgson (age 2) lived in Sandon with her "uncle" [grandfather] Samuel (49, Ag Lab), "aunt" [grandmother] Martha (52), and two "cousins": Adam (13, Errand Boy) and Elizabeth (9).[3] Her mother Sarah Hodgson (21, Servant of All Work) lived with her employer in Sandon.

[Yet to locate Emma on the 1861 census.]

Emma Hodson married Thomas Martin on 18 Jan 1869 in Stafford, Staffordshire.[4] The marriage was registered in Stafford in the first quarter of the year.[5]

Emma and Thomas had at least eleven children:

In 1871 Emma Martin (age 22) lived in Newport, Shropshire with her husband Thomas (23, Agricultural Labourer) and daughter Harriet E (1).[6]

In 1881 Emma Martin (age 33) lived at Ricardo St in Trentham, Staffordshire with her husband Thomas (34, Gardener) and four children: Emily (10), Thomas (8), Hannah [Ann] (3), and Amelia (1).[7]

In 1891 Emma Martin (age 42) lived in Caverswall, Staffordshire with her husband Thomas (48, Coal Miner) and six children: Ann (13), Emma (9, Scholar), Harry (7, Scholar), Charlie (5, Scholar), Earnest (2), and Herbert (0).[8]

Emma's husband passed away before 1901.

In 1901 Emma Martin (age 50, Laundress) lived in Caverswall with three of her sons: Charlie (15, Farm Servant), Ernest (12) and Herbert (10), son-in-law Charles A Brassington (24, Coal Hewer), and daughter Emma Brassington (20).[9]

In 1911 Emma Martin (age 59) lived in Caverswall with two of her sons: Ernest (22, Farm Labourer) and Herbert (20, Bricklayer's Labourer), as well as her grandson John Hodson (15, Apprentice Wooden Box Maker).[10]
