Biography

George was born before 18 December 1825 in Stapleford, Nottingham. He was the son of Joseph Hodson and Sarah Wallis.[1]

George was baptised on 18 December 1825 in Stapleford, Nottingham.[2][3]

In 1841 George (age about 15) was living in Church Lane, Stapleford, Nottinghamshire. Age is only given as 10, but it appears that the '5-year band' method has been applied to all over age 5.[2]

In 1848 George (age about 22) was employed as a Railway porter. in Not found in 1841 census, unless as.[3]

i) manservant at Farnsfield, Notts, b.abt 1828; or
ii) ag. lab. at Kirklington, Notts, b. abt 1825, but not 'in county'.

When George was 22 he married on 7 March 1848 in Ely St Mary parish church.[3]

Marriage was by banns. Witnesses were G. Henson and H. Newborn.
Couple appear to have separated between 1861 and 1871. (National Archives has a record re a divorce in 1860, but this appears to be a different couple, because the husband is listed with a middle name of Frederick, which appears nowhere for this George, even on his marriage certificate).
Daughter Caroline (and Lucy initially) stayed with father, and Emily with mother.

When George was about 25 he married in 1851 in Duke Street, Boston, Lincolnshire.[4]

Between 1851 and 1877 George (age about 25) was employed as a Railway guard/conductor..[5][6]

When George was about 31 he married in 1857 at 20 Mark Street, Leeds.[7]

When George was about 35 he married in 1861 at 61 William Street North, Islington.[8]

In 1871 George (age about 45) was living in Roman Road, Lower Holloway, Finsbury.[9]

In 1881 George (age about 55) was employed as a Station master in Station Master's House, Edmonton.[10]

His housekeeper in 1881 was born in Boston, Lincolnshire, where he had lived in 1851.
A niece Ellen Hodson, who was living with him in 1881, was shown as born in Lowestoft in abt 1864. She was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Hodson, who had a family there from 1850 on. They are shown in the 1881 census (as Hodgson), as being born respectively in Hartsey, Derbyshire (which appears to be part of Ripley) in about 1823 and in Ely, Cambridgeshire, in about 1824. No record of their marriage or births found, so it is uncertain exactly what the relationship is. They are also buried in Lowestoft cemetery, and he is recorded as a railway guard.
No record found of Samuel and Elizabeth's marriage, but a possible christening record is given in an extracted entry in the IGI on 18.1.1824, at Pentrich in Derbyshire (parents Benjamin and Ellen - onelater child at Pentrich, then two at Ripley). Pentrich is next to Ripley, and both are on the Cromford Canal, which connects with the Erewash Canal. Perhaps therefore Samuel is George's cousin rather than brother, and Benjamin is Joseph's brother?
On the other hand, this could be the Benjamin who married Sarah's sister and had earlier children at Stapleford, in which case the relationship may be on her side (only?). This Benjamin was born at South Wingfield, which is not far from Pentrich - and he did have a brother Joseph.

In 1891 George (age about 65) was employed as a Retired railway servant at 36 Alexandra Road, Lowestoft. National Archives' index has a document relating to the sale of his former house back to the railway in 1888.[11]

George died at the age of 66 in February 1892 in Lowestoft, Suffolk. He is listed in the Lowestoft Cemetery index as having been buried on 6.2.1892 at age 66, and retired, of Alexandra Road (although his death was only registered, in Mutford District, in the July-December quarter).[11]
