Biography

Belinda Hoff is the daughter of John Hoff (1815-1900) and Blandina B. (Smedes) Hoff (abt.1817-1908). She was born 8 Jan 1849 in Saugerties, Ulster County, New York. She was the sixth of eight children. ^{[1] [2]}

Belinda married John Tucker (AKA Conyers ^[3] ) prior to the 1870 census. They reside in Saugerties at the 1870 census (although Belinda is listed as Malinda here.) John is a Boatman at this time. ^[4]

She had three sons with John Tucker between 1871 and 1887. They lived first in Saugerties, New York, where John worked as a boatman in 1870, and then a stone sawyer in 1880. They had two sons in Saugerties - Walter E and George M. ^[5]

By May of 1886, they had moved to Shelton, Farifield County, Connecticut. Their third son, Clifford A, was born there the following year.^[6]

They remained in Shelton until their deaths. John died in 1899, and in 1900, Their middle son George and his wife Caroline were living with Belinda and 13-year-old Clifford, Belinda remained in Shelton, and lived alone in 1910^[7],1920^[8], & 1930^[9]. In April of 1940, at the age of 91, she lived with her youngest son, Clifford in Shelton^[10].

Belinda died two months later on 18 Jun, 1940. She is buried at Riverside Cemetery alongside her husband John. ^[11]

Belinda had finished two years of college, according to the 1940 census.

Blandina or Belinda?

She has been listed as "Blandina" Hoff in several genealogies. Her name appears consistently on the census records, and her headstone, as Belinda A. or Belinda Ann, not Blandina, as her mother is named. Conflation: Dena Scully "Hoff" or "Smith?"

Belinda Hoff has been listed in a number of genealogies as the wife of Patrick Scully Jr. (abt.1840-1921). This is a conflation and incorrect. Dena and Patrick Scully's children, Peter and Anna E, have listed their mother's (Blandena's) last name as "Smith," not "Hoff." Dena's mother, Mary Smith, age 70, was living with Patrick and Dena Scully in Hurley, Ulater County, New York in 1870, and this profile outliens the life of Belinda Hoff.
