Johann Adam was born in 1704 in Friedelsheim in the Rhineland Palatinate (Rheinland Pfalz), Germany, the son of ? Hoff and ??. He married Anna Catharina Müller in 1727 in Friedelsheim, and they had one child together before emigrating to America in 1730. They arrived in Philadelphia in the Pennsylvania Colony on the ship 'Joyce', and later that year, both Catharina and their daughter died. Adam joined the German Reformed Church community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, which had become the destination for a number of emigrants from the Rhineland Palatinate. He married Juliana Seib in Seven Valleys near Lancaster in 1735. In the mid-1740s, the family moved to York County in the Pennsylvania Colony where Adam received a land grant for a 100-acre farm in Codorus (on the southern edge of present day Spring Grove, PA) in 1749, which was extended with another grant later in 1767. He and Juliana had fifteen children together between 1739 and 1762, three of whom died young. Adam and Juliana joined the Moravian church and appear to have been active members in the church community. After the First Moravian Church was established in York, Pennsylvania, Adam formalized his membership by being baptized in 1752 and he and Juliana repeated their marriage ceremony. Adam also formalized his American citizenship in 1762. Adam passed away in 1785 in Codorus, PA and was buried in the Moravian New Cemetery in York, PA. The grave has since been moved to the Prospect Hill Cemetery in York.

Research notes
The Hoffee genealogy identifies Adam's parents as Johann Peter, son of Antonius, and Anna Catherina Fischer, of Heddesdorf, Neuwied in Rheinland-Pfalz, noting though that his mother died nine years before Adam was born. We had originally connected Adam to this Johann Peter and Anna Catherina Fischer, but have now disconnected them as his parents since it looks clear that their son of the same name was born much earlier in 1678 in Heddesdorf. (Thanks to Chris Hoff for pointing this out!)

Additional text in footnote for Godfrey Huff:
Johann Adam Hoff, arrived in Philadelphia November 30, 1730
on the ship "Joyce". No other Huff's (Hoff's) were listed on the passenger list but at that time they only had to show the head of household and did not always list the wives or children so it is not known if he had any family with him. In about 1735 he married Juliana Seib (Seip, Syp) in Seven Valleys, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He settled in Codorus Township in Pennsylvania and they had 15 children. Their tenth child, Godfrey Hoff, migrated West to Tuscarawas County, Ohio where he eventually became know as Godfrey Huff. All later Huff's in the line were known by Huff and not Hoff.... :Source: Shane Oxley <shane@@mlode.com> (granddaughter to Emmett Huff of Walla Walla)

Death: 20 Nov 1785 (aged 80–81) Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, USA
Burial: Prospect Hill Cemetery, York, York County, Pennsylvania, USA

Bio: Johann Adam was born in 1704 in Friedelsheim in the Rhineland Palatinate (Rheinland Pfalz), Germany, the son of Johann Daniel Hoff and Anna Catherina Fischer.
