Biography

Silas was born in 1831 in Harrison County, Virginia (present day West Virginia), probably on his family's farm in Lost Creek near West Milford. He was the son of Samuel Hoff and Catherine Faris. He married Lydia Sophia Robinson in Harrison County in 1853. They settled in nearby Clarksburg where Silas worked as a carpenter and cabinet maker, and later also as a butcher and shopkeeper. Silas and Lydia had 13 children together, three of whom died young. He must have been well respected in his family as his father named him with his brother Lewis as executors of his will. Silas was still living in Clarksburg when he died there of stroke in 1896 at the age of 55. He is buried together with his wife in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Clarksburg, WV.

Silas's surname is sometimes written as Huff or Haugh.

In the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Lydia reported having had 12 children, but records indicate 13. Is there one that could be a mistake?
