Biography

Johann Leonhart Hoffman was the son of George Paul Hoffman (1789–1859) and Margaret Magdeline Nudinger (1790-??), who were married on 4 January 1817 in Elpersheim, Mergentheim, Württemberg, Germany. He had eight siblings; Anna Katharina Dorothea 1813, Anna Maria Juliana 1817, Margaretha Sophia 1821, Johann Friederich, 1823, Michael Christian 1825, Georg Friedrich 1827, Magdalena Friederica Juliana 1830 and Catherine Margarethe Wilhelmine 1836.

Baptism on 11 Nov 1831 at Elpersheim.^[1]

His father, George Paul Hoffman, died on 27 September 1859 in Elpersheim, Mergentheim, Württemberg, Germany.

Immigration in 1860.

Leonhart was married to Margaretha Christine Gottula soon after arriving in America, probably in late 1860 and possibly in Illinois. This is proposed because she was listed in the Baltimore passenger list under her maiden name, but they could have been married earlier in Germany.

They had eleven children; Barbara Julina (1861–1896), John G 1862–??), John George (1862–1948), Fredericka Louisa (1863–1876), Fredericka Kunagunda (1865–1950), Johanna Marie (1867–1941), Katherina Johanna (1868–1942), Christina L (1870–1962), John Christian (1873–1911), Louis John (1876–1950) and Paul Edward (1883–1958).

Residence in 1865 was in Florence, Stephenson, Illinois.^[2]

Their daughter, Fredericka Louisa, died at age 13 on 21 January 1876 in Steinauer, Pawnee, Nebraska.

Residence in 1880 was in Stemaner, Pawnee, Nebraska.^[3]

Their daughter, Barbara Julina, was married to Herman Edward Rusch in 1882, she had five children and died at age 35 on 26 July 1896 at Steinauer.

Residence in 1900 was in Steinauer & Turkey Creek Precincts, Pawnee, Nebraska.^[4]

His wife, Margaretha Christina Gottula Hoffman, died on 28 April 1901 at Steinauer, Pawnee, Nebraska.

Johann Leonhart Hoffman died on 19 December 1905 in Steinauer of Pawnee County in Nebraska. His burial was in the Salem's Cemetery in Steinauer.^{[5] [6]}
