Dirk was born at Riebeek-Kasteel in 1848. He was the son of Hendrik Hoffman and Margaritha Wilhelmina Smit.

Dirk was christened at the Dutch Reformed Church, Malmesbury on 23 Jul 1848. Baptism register: Parents: Hendrik Paul Hoffman and Margaretha Wilhelmina Smit of Riebeek Kasteel. Witnesses: Katharina Wilhelmina Laubscher, Michiel Adriaan Hoffman.
