1. ↑ August Carl Hoffmann was born September 26, 1909, to Louise Strieter Hoffmann and August William Hoffmann in Chicago, IL. His first language was German, and he didn't really learn English until his father died in November, 1918, and 9-year-old August had to get a job to support himself, his mother, and his grandmother, Mrs. Steging. Inheriting his father's photographic equipment, August Became the youngest member of The Chicago Camera Club (which was where distinguished their work in museums globally). During his school years, he worked for an architectural photographer, where he learned everything to become a pro. He also received a Black Belt in jiujitsu in 1931. When he graduated from Lake View HS in 1927, Augie (or "Gus") became a commercial photographerl, with a very successful career in advertising that lasted until his retirement in 1973. In 1938 he married Mary Gilruth Sealy (a divorcee! Horrors!), and adopted her son, Frederick Collin Sealy. In 1940 they lost a son at birth (Carl), but had a living daughter, Nancy Louise, on July 7, 1945. (She is still living). In 1973 they retired to their 40 acres in Door County, WI, but illness overcame them after 13 years there. August died in August 1991 in Sturgeon Bay, WI, and Mary died in February 2008, in Evanston, IL.
