Cyril Julian Hoffnung was born on 14th October 1890 at Chelsea, London, England. He was the eldest of three sons of Sidney Hoffnung and Violet Goldsmid.[1] His father changed their surnames to Hoffnung-Goldsmid by Royal licence before 1898.
Cyril was educated at Eton and University College, Oxford. He was a Barrister-at-Law. Cyril was appointed Justice of the Peace (JP).[2]
Cyril joined the 9th The Queen's Royal Lancers (Special Reserve), and served in France from 1914-1917 and then Italy from 1917-1918. He attained the rank of Captain. He was Mentioned in Despatches and appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1919.[3] His 1918 diaries recorded in Italy were published as a book after the war: Diary of a Liaison Officer in Italy, 1918; London, Williams and Norgate, 1920. His medal set sold in 2010 for £1,233.[4]
On 23rd March 1920 he married Anne Emily "Nancy" McGillicuddy, daughter of John McGillicuddy of Flesk Castle, County Kerry, Ireland.[5] They had three sons, the first of whom died in infancy:
