Research Notes

Possible family connection to Hogans in Wanganui:

On 16th of April 1874 Michael John Hogan our Old James's nephew married Ellen Delaney born 1852 Tralee, Kerry dying on 19th March 1941 in Wanganui. Michael and Ellen had a son: James the boxer who was married at 40. Michael had come to New Zealand in 1868, Ellen in 1872 on the “HALCYON” with her sister Johanna.

The dates are important and put paid to an old family story which had it that Mary Ann Hogan (Polly, Madam Bertini) moved to Wanganui to live with relatives after leaving her first husband Thomas Hunter Kilgour. However by 1868 Mary Ann Hogan/Kilgour had left that town for the UK with her new husband Henry Francis Emly. [2]

Johanna married John BRADLEY on 14 Apr 1874 and who died 10 Feb 1926, in Waverley, South Taranaki.[3].

ERROR IN THE FOLLOWING

Michael had come to New Zealand in 1868, Ellen in 1872 on the “HALCYON” with her sister Johanna, who later in 1872/1419 married Edward Coleman.

CLARIFICATION: Ellen was Ellen DELANEY who married Michael John HOGAN on 16 Apr 1874 in Wanganui, New Zealand. Therefore Johanna could not be Johanna HOGAN who married Edward COLEMAN.

CORRECTION: Johanna was Johanna DELANEY, Ellen's sister, married John BRADLEY on 14 Apr 1874 and who died 10 Feb 1926, in Waverley, South Taranaki.

Thanks for the clarification Brian, have edited. The wording came from another source which was obviously incorrect!

Hogan-1908 and Hogan-1173 appear to represent the same person because: Same person - just ended up duplicating him when I added a marriage to his daughter - read biography with Mary Ann (Polly) HOGAN.
