Douglas Chisholm wrote, "Every inch of James Hog's memorial suggests success and prosperity. With a winged angel hovering round him and the crown of immortality above him, it is as if he is saying, 'Be mindful of Mr Johnston's preaching'. His main interest is naturally his craft. He has the shuttle in his right hand as he sits at his huge loom. It has a large frame on which are stretched the long threads of the warp on the rollers. It is a wonderful 18th Century picture.".
