William Hogg was born on 19 August 1834 in Presbyterian, Boardmills, Down, Ireland, the son of Mary Cherry and James Hogg.^{[citation needed]}

He married Marion McGhee Herriot on 13 May 1862 in Creswick, Victoria, Australia.^[1] Their children were:

• James Hamilton Cherry Hogg (1864–1869)
• William Hogg (1867–1926)

William died on 23 October 1913 in Creswick, aged 79 years.
