Biography

3165. JOSEPH RAMBO was probably born prior to 1765 as he served in the Militia during the Revolutionary War. He married SUSANNAH (CHANEY) HOGG. Joseph served in the South Carolina militia under Capt. LeRoy Hammond after the fall of Charleston. A claim was filed for service in the Revolution for the period between 20 Aug 1783 and 31 Aug 1786 in SC. Payment was made to "Joseph Rambow" on 23 Jun 1785 for twenty six pounds sterling for duty in the Militia. On 13 Apr 1789 the sheriff of Edgefield Co. sold 100 acres on Stevens Creek to Joseph Rambo for 39 pounds pursuant to a judgement to settle a debt of William Herndon, deceased. On 29 Aug 1789 Joseph deeded his interest in his father's land on Horns Creek to his mother, Mary Rambo. It is possible that his mother died by 17 Aug 1791 when Joseph and Susanna sold to Fielding Rennolds for 200 pounds 200 acres described as "adj. lands of Walter Jackson ... my spring branch ... Horns Creek to Farned ... Littleberry Adams ... to top of ridge that divides Horns Creek & Dry Creek ... to Jackson's but now Cobb's line". A notice by Joseph Rambo in the newspaper issue of April 27, 1799 warned the public from trading on his account with Susannah Chaney Rambo "as I will not be responsible for her debts." According to a great-granddaughter, "We are told that [Joseph Rambo] was a man of great physical strength, having trained himself to lift great weights by his teeth. In this way he could lift a small table with his wife seated upon it. He died at an early age as the result of an accident. According to the custom of the old south he employed a shoemaker to make the year's supply of shoes for family and slaves. One day while the shoemaker was at work our great-grandfather came in and began to joke and tease him. The shoemaker becoming worried, threw a wooden last at him, striking him in the side with the point of it. It all ended in a laugh and general good humor, but in a few minutes our grandfather became violently ill and died as a result of the accident - a ruptured blood vessel. Before his death he freely forgave the shoemaker and requested that he be made suffer no punishment for the deed." Joseph died in Aug 1809 and his estate settled in 1810. His wife Susannah was the administrator of his estate when his will was filed in Edgefield County, SC. The value of his estate when inventoried was $824.00, most of which was in the form of notes and accounts. After the death of Joseph, Susannah married LeRoy Hammond Jr., who was justice of the peace of the Ninety-Six District in 1794. Joseph and Susannah Rambo were the parents of these children:

31651. MARY MOORE RAMBO, b. ca 1796, m. William M. Pond

Other witnesses: David Barnett, John Miller, Eason C. Drake. Benjamin Grumbles in conversation with James McQueen in Campbellton in 1805 heard McQueen say (in the presence of George Grumbles) that Mrs. Rambo had furnished him with part of the money to purchase the land where LeRoy Hammond now lives, that he got John Hall to make the purchase, that he would pay off the ballance of the money, that he would make her titles any time.
