Biography

Margaretha was the daughter of Emperor Friedrich II von Staufen and Isabella of England. There is considerable debate about the dates and places of birth, even regarding the sex of their children. The only firm fact about them is that at the time of the death of their mother in Dec 1241 there were two surviving children, a boy and a girl, as Friedrich II records in a letter to Henry III of England reporting the death of Henry's sister Isabella.[1] Margaretha's birth is dated by some authors to the end of 1236/beginning of 1237,[2] based on Ryccardus de San Germano who mentions in an entry for Feb 1237 a nova imperatoris prole feminea de nova consorte.[3] Friedrich himself writes about the birth of a daughter in an undated letter, commonly attributed to 1237.[4] The Annales S. Pantaleonis Coloniensis record the repudiation of her betrothal to Hermann von Thüringen on occasion of his death in 1241, which must have happened before 9 Oct 1239, the date he married Helena von Braunschweig-Lüneburg,[5] and finally, Pope Innocent IV states in a letter that she was 2 years old when betrothed.[6] This should make it highly unlikely that she was the child whose birth caused the death of her mother 1 Dec 1241 in Foggia. [7] The letter of her brother Konrad IV von Staufen from 1254 in which he talks about Margaretha's children[8] seems to refer to potential future children, therefore not helping with respect to her birth date. After the broken betrothal to Hermann von Thüringen she was betrothed anew to Albrecht von Meissen about 1247.[9] The date of their marriage is unknown but probably was 1255 as their first child Heinrich was born 21 Mar 1256.[10] Margaretha left her husband in 1270 and died in the same year on 8 Aug[11] in Frankfurt.[12]
