Friedrich Wilhelm I., King in Prussia and Elector of Brandenburg, known as the Soldier-King, was born on August 14, 1688. He was the son of Friedrich III. von Brandenburg and Sophie Charlotte von Hannover. He died on May 31, 1740.

On November 28, 1706, Friedrich Wilhelm married Sophie Dorothea von Hannover, daugher of Georg I. Ludwig von Hannover (later to become King George I of Great Britain) and Sophia Dorothea von Braunschweig-Lüneburg. They had 14 children:
