Utica Herald-Dispatch, Friday Evening, June 16, 1916: Richfield Springs DR. F. C. HOKE DIED TODAY Was Held in Affectionate Esteem by Many --- Successful Practitioner LONG PROMINENT IN COMMUNITY
Richfield Springs, June 16 --- News of the death of Dr. Fenimore C. Hoke, which occurred at his home in Main street, this morning, while not unexpected, has cast a gloom over the many who loved him for his fine personality. He was a physician of extensive experience and great skill but he combined with his professional services rare tact, keen judgment, a winning manner, and a kindly sympathy which brought comfort and cheer into many sick rooms. He was charitable to a large degree and the sunshine of his presence, his healing skill and his general geniality will make his memory a shining one wherever he was known. Many found him a tower of strength in illness and in death. He was a fine type of Christian gentleman and such lives never die.
Dr. Hoke was born in the town of Springfield 45 years ago and after graduating from the High School of this village he studied at the College of physicians and Surgeons of New York, where he received his degree. He enjoyed a large and lucrative practice in New York, but failing health was the cause of his removing to Mexico City, Mexico, and later to this village, coming here in the spring of 1910. Although he had, for many years, the discomforts of ill health and other infirmities to contend with, his courage was undaunted. No complaint was never heard that his physical strength was not equal tin his talk. Last winter he overtaxed his failing strength in his - professional services and in April he was taken to a private hospital in Utica, where he and Mrs. Hoke remained for several weeks. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Mary Goodrich of this village, who died in 1900, and his second wife, who has cheered and comforted him to the last, was Miss Georgiana Morgan of New York. Two children, Mrs. Niles J. Kiefer and Dorothy Hoke of this village survive, a young son Edwin dying several years ago. His father, Theodore Hoke, died last month. There are several brothers, George of Springfield, Henry of Lyons and Lee of Canandaigua and Mrs. Floe Paul Cook of Springfield and one grandson, Niles Kiefer, jr.
The funeral will be held from his home on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
From Ron Miller (millrl@aol.com) on Nov. 30, 2008: Utica Sunday Tribune, Sunday, June 21, 1896 Dr. Fennimore Hoke, one of the attendants at the bath house, was married Wednesday at New York to Miss Mae Goodrich, formerly of this place.
Richfield Springs Mercury, April 26, 1900 Dr. Fenimore Hoke, who came here on a sad journey Friday, remained a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Hoke, before returning to New York...
Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Hoke attended the funeral services at Richfield Springs of Mrs. Fenimore C. Hoke, on Friday last...
Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Hoke and family met their son, Dr. Fenimore Hoke, at Richfield Springs and attended the funeral service of Mrs. Fenimore Hoke Friday last at Richfield Springs...
Universal sorrow and regret is expressed by the sad and unexpected death of Mrs. Fenimore C. Hoke, of New York. The deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved husband, Dr. Hoke, who formerly resided here and has many friends and relatives here. Words are inadequate in a sad death like this, when one is young and enjoys the happiness of life, to be taken from those dear to them. He has said "What I doeth now ye shall not know." The remains were brought here Friday, and the internment was in the Springfield Centre cemetery. The floral tributes were profuse and elegant.
