Biography

Lydia was born about 1785. She was probably the daughter of Joseph Holcombe (see Research Notes). She married Aaron Brown by about 1805 and had a daughter Sarah about 1805 and a son Benjamin Edmondson Brown about 1815 and other children as well. She died before the 1830 census which shows Aaron's household with a son under 5 years so she died recently. Aaron remarried in 1847.

Research Notes

There is a land transaction record of 50 acres of land in Laurens, South Carolina, 1 Nov 1816, between Edea Holcombe and Aaron Brown [2]. Reuben Holcombe signed as a witness. Following this transaction is a statement with Edea Holcombe expressing her love and affection for her niece Sary Brown, daughter of Aaron Brown, giving her some furniture and a saddle. Aaron Brown and James Holcombe witnessed, naming her Sarah Brown instead of Sary. Edea is certainly a sister of Aaron's wife Lydia. Edea is thought to be a daughter of Joseph Holcombe [1]. Joseph has 3 daughters in 1790 and 1f10-15, 2f16-25 in 1800 yet only daughters Rebecca and Edea are included in that Holcombe genealogy, so Lydia must be the missing one. Joseph was a major landowner on Durbin Creek, Laurens, South Carolina where Aaron's family were also major landowners.

The baptism of her son, Benjamin, is in the Louisiana church records in 1864, noting his birth in 1815 in South Carolina. All the names, dates, and places fit but Benjamin was in Utah in early 1860s and then in California in 1865. The family traveled from South Carolina or Georgia, to Grimes, Texas, then north to Council Bluffs and onward by wagon train to Utah. An identical record [2] is in Missouri church records, again in Indiana church records [3], and again in Michigan church records [4]. These records have since been consolidated into a single record on FamilySearch so it must be some Mormon Church thing.
