The 1810 census of his father, in Canton, Luzerne, Pennsylvania lists three boys under ten years of age, one of whom would most likely have been Hiram.[1] And he is certainly one of the two boys between 10 and 15 on his father's 1820 census.[2]
He married Polly Wilcox, probably 31 August 1823.[3] We do know that the family was well established in Canton by 1830, with two daughters under five years old.[4]
The 1840 census shows that Hiram and Polly had moved their family to nearby Leroy, about a three hour walk from Canton, and that the family had grown. In all, there was one daughter under five, one daughter under ten, and two daughters under fifteen. His parents and several brothers are also enumerated in Leroy, so it is likely they all moved at about the same time.[5]
By 1850, their eldest daughters, Aurilla and Betsey, were already married, but there were still five children at home, and they were still working on the farm in Leroy.[6] Ten years later, only the two youngest, Samantha and George, remained at home with them.[7]
Hiram had retired from farming by 1870, and the couple were living in Burlington with their daughter Laurissa and her husband, but they had returned to Leroy by 1880, where Hiram was working as a laborer.[8][9]
Hiram died on the 21st day of January, 1895, at the age of 88. [3][10]
