William was born in 1829 in Hampshire. He was the eldest son of John Holdaway and Mary Norgate. He came to NZ with his parents in 1841-42. He married Anna Carter in 1854[1] He passed away in 1897.[2]

When William was a child, his family migrated to Aotearoa New Zealand in 1841-42 to be pioneering residents of the city of Nelson, John on the Whitby and Mary and the children (William 12, Emma 10, George 8, James 5 and an infant who was born and died on board) following in the Mary Ann several months later. Sadly, William's mother Mary passed away just a few months after the migration.

There is considerably more detail about the Holdaway family's migration to New Zealand and first years there on the profile of William's father John Holdaway (1804-1888). There is also a detailed account of William's life and legacy (including photos and a full family tree up to 1991) in the chapter of The Holdaway Family: Pioneers of Nelson about him and his family, which is uploaded as an image.

Research note

Have added "needs profiles created" category as profiles are needed for two children (and spouse + children of one of them). Details are in descendancy chart in chapter in Holdaway book (uploaded as an image).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

My great grandmother Mary Eleanor Holdaway is William Holdaway and Hannah (Anna) Carter's daughter. I have sources from Somerset to add Anna's parents to this record. I have just joined Wikitree so hesitate to rush in to adding anything without checking the protocols first. I have just today posted off my Ancestry autosomnal DNA kit so eventually will be able to collaborate further.
