Biography

ELIZABETH HOLDEN WHEELER
ELIZABETH HOLDEN was born in 1725. Source discrepancy has not shown to be problematic for her as a Subject of Research but eqaully, the definitive source identifications of her prior to her December 14 1747 Marriage to MOSES WHEELER, is indeed scant. From what I percieve the densest Source citations either specifically of a birthplace, or as implied, prefers:
She was the daughter of William Holden and Elizabeth Mnu. She passed away in 1816.

"...Immediately after he returned home from the above service, orders came to raise men for two months to go to Cavendish in Vermont, about twenty miles from this place, to guard the frontiers against the inroads made by the enemy.
MOSES WHEELER of this town came to me and said he must go to Cavendish or hire someone to go for him. I then agreed to go and serve his term of duty, and did immediately join Captain Abel Walker’s company and marched to Cavendish, where we were stationed and doing duty, scouting about the frontiers until the information came that there had been a battle at Bennington...."

Enlisted 10 May, 1775, Captain Moses Wheeler’s company, Colonel Jona. Ward’s regiment; residence given as Wrentham. Received bounty coat or equivalent 19 Feb., 1776, at Dorchester. He may be the same James, whose name appears on a roll dated at Newton, of a company stationed at Roxbury, commanded by Capt. Edward Fuller, Col. William McIntosh regiment, in camp from 19 March to 16 April, 1778. This last company was from Needham. Both Needham and Wreatham were formerly parts of Dedham.

[196] William (Stephen, Richard), born probably in Groton; died 25 December, 1745, in the army before Louisburg; married about 1725, Elizabeth, who married, second, 20 April, 1747, John Daby (or Darby) of Harvard, who died 6 January, 1769, at Harvard, aged 80 years, 11 months (g.s .). His widow died 9 Sept., 1767, in her 62d year (g.s. at Harvard).
Their Children, born at Groton:
1. ELIZABETH HOLDEN, born 2 July, 1725; Baptized 26 November, 1727; Married on 14 December, 1747, MOSES WHEELER of Groton, who removed to Charlestown, New Hampshire. He was in some of the fiercest encounters in the French and Indian Wars, and held the rank of Ensign. He participated in the celebrated defence of Charlestown under Captain Stevens, 4 April, 1747, and was with Hobbs in his encounter with Sackett.
A very large man, though of good proportions, he was said to have been the strongest man in the cordon of forts protecting the frontier. Having been detailed with five others to take a small cannon to the top of Hoosac Mountain, while the others were discussing the means to carry out instructions, WHEELER swung the gun onto his shoulder, and bore it to the assigned place, pausing once only on the way.

THE HOLDEN GENEALOGY
WILLIAM HOLDEN inherited from his father three-fourths of one common right in Groton and in the Gore, to which land had been laid out prior to 1737. He appears as grantor of land but twice and not as a grantee at all.
WILLIAM HOLDEN enlisted 30 August, 1725, as Centinel in company commanded by Captain Joseph Blanchard and served until 28 October, his residence being given as Dunstable.
WILLIAM HOLDEN was sergeant in the company commanded by Captain :Jonathan Smith, 9th Mass. Rgt. (Colonel Joseph Dwight) in the forces before :Louisburg, 1745. Charles Holden (193-2) was a member of this company, as :were other Groton men.

:Dudley Bradstreet in his Journal, kept at the siege of Louisburg, notes :under date of Christmas (1745):

Died in the Royal Hospital, Sgnt. Wm. Holden.”
Administration on his estate was granted 13 September, 1746, to his :widow ELIZABETH, who accounted for the estate as £8004 real and :£359-17-6 personal property 13 March, 1748, signing as ELIZABETH :DABY, and on the 1 May, 1750, ELIZABETH and JOHN DABY of :Harvard quitclaim to WILLIAM HOLDEN, in consideration of £2-2-8, the :said Elizabeth’s right of dower.
The homestead, in the southwestern corner of the present town of Groton, consisting of a house, barn, and 55 acres of land, bounded south by Abraham Moors and JONATHAN HOLDEN, north by the said Jonathan and by STEPHEN HOLDEN, and two acres of meadow.
This estate was deeded 22 March, 1750-1, by Isaac Holden to Amos :Farnsworth of Groton, yeoman, for £203, it being described as the :homestead of WILLIAM HOLDEN, deceased, bounding northerly and :westerly on a town way, southerly by Abraham Moors and on all other :parts by Stephen and Jonathan Holden, also 2 acres in Rock Meadow.
ISAAC HOLDEN may have bought the farm from WILLIAM HOLDEN Jr., :the eldest son, to whom it had been set off in consideration of his paying
£17-5-0 to each of his brothers and sisters, whose names are given in the :following order:
JOSHUA HOLDEN
RICHARD HOLDEN
JONATHAN HOLDEN
ELIZABETH WHEELER
JEMIMA HOLDEN
EUNICE HOLDEN
ABIGAIL HOLDEN
LYDIA HOLDEN, but, though the deed is of record, possession of the estate seems to have remained with the HOLDEN’s.
In the final settlement 5 June, 1750, Joseph Stone appeared as attorney for :MOSES WHEELER husband of ELIZABETH HOLDEN.
===================
There isn't a lot of information about Elizabeth Holden Wheeler but I offer what I do have and imagine in my heart. I honor this noble ancestor who had the courage to raise her eight children in the wilderness of New Hampshire.
She must have taught them to be good people and she supported her husband in his leadership roles.
Elizabeth was born 2 July 1725, at Groton,Massachusetts to William Holden and Elizabeth Darby.
