Benjamin Holgate was born in Lancashire, England.

Benjamin was born in Burnley, Lancashire, England, in 1837. He was the second child of Thomas Holgate, and Margaret Stow. Benjamin resided with his family, in Hulme, Lancashire, until his marriage in 1861.

Benjamin married Sarah Barnes on September 25, 1861, at the Cathedral in Manchester. Benjamin and Sarah would have three daughters between 1862, and 1867. Benjamin passed away on May 19, 1877, in Cornwall, England. He was buried on May 26, 1877, St. Mary's, Scilly Islands, Cornwall, England. Benjamin had taken a job as an Hotel Keeper at the "Hugh House", in St. Mary's, one of the Scilly Islands, in Corwall, England, when he passed away. His personal estate, valued under 600 pounds, was left to his widow, Sarah.
