Joshua Holgrave immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Joshua Holgrave was born about 1615, son of John and Elizabeth (___) Holgrave, whose origins are unknown. [1] He came to New England aged about 18, in 1633, with his parents and two sisters, settling at Salem, Massachusetts. [2][3]
1636: April 18: John Holgrave, fisherman was granted land at Salem, and his son Joshua Holgrave, granted a houselot. [2][3][1]
1637: November: Joshua was granted a 10 acre lot at Salem. [2][1]
1637: November 12: Joshua was admitted to the church at Salem. [2][3]
1637: December: Joshua Holgrave, with a 'household of one', was granted 1/2 acre of marsh and meadow. [2]
1639: November: As Joshua had indicated the desire for a farm, the town granted him 50 acres. [2]
He married Jane Conant, daughter of Richard and Jane (Slade) Conant by 1640, as their first child was born in Salem in November that year. [4] Jane was baptized on June 16, 1611 at East Budleigh, Devon, England and likely came to Salem by about 1639, under the protection of her uncle Roger Conant. [2]
Roger Conant, in his will written on March 1, 1667/8, left L3 each to the daughters of 'my cousin Jane Mason, deceased and included a share for Love Stevens child. [5]
Joshua is thought to have died between April 16, 1642, baptism of their daughter Love Holgrave, and 1643. Records of a will or estate have not been found. [2]
After his death widow Jane Holgrave married Elias Mason by May, 1647 . [2]
Jane Mason died at Salem on November 9, 1661 [9: 9m: 1661]. [2][4]
Children
Eliza/Elizabeth baptized at Salem on November 1, 1640 [1]; died after 1694; married first Alexander MacMillen before September 28, 1658; married second, John Baxter at Salem on November 1, 1679, as his second wife. [2][4]
Love baptized on April 17, 1642 [1]; died on December 7, 1675; married John Stevens on July 2, 1661. [2][4]
