Sp4 Ismael Holguin's Bronze Star citation read:
"for distinguishing himself by outstanding meritorious service in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam during the period July 1967 to Feb 1968. Through his untiring efforts and professional ability, he consistently obtained outstanding results. He was quick to grasp the implications of new problems with which he was faced as a result of the ever changing situations inherent in counterinsurgency operations and to find ways and means to solve those problems"
Ismael received the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Good Conduct Medal posthumously. His awards went to his wife, Conception Holguin in a ceremony at Fort McClellan, Alabama, sometime in 1968, after she enlisted in the United States Women's Army Corps.
Sp4 Ismael Holguin was killed in action while serving in Vietnam, 7 February 1968. He was later buried at Mount Olive Cemetery located in Big Spring, TX.
