Biography

According to her modern gravestone, Sarah Holland was born in about 1755.[1] She was the daughter of George Holland and, probably, his wife Mary (___). She is identified as "Sarah Cope" in her father's 1802 will.[2]

Marriage

Sarah Holland is identified as Sarah Cope in her father's 1802 will,[2] and her modern gravestone in Warren County, Tennessee, identifies her as the "mother of James Cope."[2] Many unsourced trees and online databases identify her husband as William Cope, who may have been an immigrant from England; researchers give death dates for him ranging from at least 1793-1813. However, the original source(s) for these claims are uncertain.

However, there is a William Cope who appears on the tax lists for Lee County, Virginia, in 1795 and 1796, in the same area further west from Grayson County, where Jeremiah Hatfield also appears. Jeremiah is identified by many researchers as the husband of Sarah's sister Fanny (Holland) Hatfield.[3] Thus, it seems likely that both Sarah Cope and her sister Fanny Hatfield were living with these husbands in Lee County, Virginia, by 1796.

Later Life

Sarah Cope was still alive and living further west in Warren County, Tennessee, in 1830, when she appears as the female aged 70-80 in the household of her son James in the census count.[4]

Death

According to her modern gravestone, she died in about 1830 and was buried at the Cope Cemetery in Mount Zion, Warren County, Tennessee.[1]

Research Notes

Disputed Parents

Sarah Cope's father George Holland, who lived in Montgomery County, Virginia, by no later than 1782, and made his will in Grayson County, Virginia, in 1802, is frequently confused with a different George Holland who lived during the same period more than 200 miles away, in Louisa and Goochland Counties, Virginia, but also had a wife named Mary. This profile was previously attached incorrectly as a daughter to that other George Holland and his wife Mary (Coleman) Holland.
