Biography
Catherine (Holland) Hannant was born in Norfolk, England.
St Michael-at-Plea
Sophia Catherine Holland was born in Norwich in 1847 to mat maker George Holland and his wife Sophia, née Rant.[1] She was baptised on February 7 at St Michael-at-Plea,[2] a medieval church close to Norwich city centre, and lived with her parents and siblings further north of the River Wensum in Mill Hill, New Catton.[3]
By the age of fourteen, Sophia was already working as a cotton spinner.[4] Her older sister Sarah, however, wasn't working, while her older brother George was a bricklayer's labourer. In 1866, Sophia married baker Walter Hannant in Norwich,[5] and shortly thereafter Sophia and Walter welcomed their first child, a son also named Walter,[6] who was born on April 7 and baptised on May 6 at Christ Church.[7]
Walter and Sophia–recorded by her middle name Catherine–subsequently moved to nearby Heigham. No longer working in his father's bakery,[8] Walter at this point began a career as a shoe rivetter while he and Sophia welcomed two daughters – Mary Ann in 1867[9] and Alice in 1869.[10][11]
After remaining in Norfolk for several years, where their children Flora[12] and Ernest were also born, Walter and Sophia moved the family to Hackney, in London, where Walter worked as a bootmaker and their children, Nathaniel,[13] Harriet,[14] Louisa[15] and William[16] were born.[17]
Sophia later returned to Norwich, where her death was registered in 1889 at the age of 42.[18]
