Louis James Holland was born September 14, 1875 in Fairfax County Virginia was the youngest born of 4 children born to William Holland &Catherine Bausbach. Catherine already had 3 children from her previous marriage to Jacob Hellmuth.
Louis grew up on his dad's farm in Fairfax Co and sometime between 1882-1885 his father moved the family to Chicago, IL where he they opened 2 butcher shops. A butcher by trade which seems to be the family business, he dropped out of school in the 8th grade to help run the shop with his brother, Al. When their father died they closed one of the shops and continued to run the other until Al got sick with Cancer and the shop was closed prior to 1920.
On October 20, 1907 Louis married [Haase-310|Jeanette Haase]] and they had two children Dorothy Frances Holland and Dr. Ira Howard Holland. His wife Janne passed away in 1925 leaving Louis to raise his two young children. He also was left with the responsibility of the care of Janne's father Julius Haase until he entered the "Home for Aging Jews" in 1930, Chicago. This left the care of his son, Janne's eldest brother Charlie who had gone blind, until his death in 1937.
Because he did not get to finish school, education was very important to Louis and he pushed education with his children so they may not end up like himself, struggling to make end's meat. Ira got a doctorate from Columbia and Fran got a masters degree.
Louis got a job managing a Tea Bus company and worked there many years and was laid off before he would become eligible for pension. He got cancer himself and after having a lung removed he got sick and passed away on Dec. 21, 1951 at his home on Wilson St. His daughter had him cremated that day but she didn't bury the ashes until Feb. 1968, when she also interred the ashes of her deceased husband Gordon who died in March 1951. His ashes are buried at Graceland Cemetery.
