Biography

Birth

James was born on 17 April 1837 in Bleary Townland, County Down, Ireland. He was the son of Robert Holland and Eleanor Fulton.

Like his brother Samuel he emigrated from Ireland to New Zealand, settling in Canterbury.

From NZ Herald article, 2018. The Cyclopedia of New Zealand recorded that between soon after his arrival in New Zealand in 1868, and 1873, Holland worked for Marmaduke Dixon snr at Dixon's farm inland from Kaiapoi.

Holland later farmed with his brother, Samuel, at what was known as Kaiapoi Island, then on his own account. He joined the Druids in 1879 and became chairman of the lodge the following year.

THE KAIAPOI MURDER

INQUEST HELD TO-DAY. NO CLUE TO MYSTERY. IMPORTANT MEDICAL EVIDENCE. The adjourned inquest on the deaths of James Frackleton Holland and Marion Holland, the victims of the Kaiapoi tragedy on May 11, wascommenced in the Courthouse at Kaiapoi this morning.

WHAT WAS ELICITED AT THE INQUEST - THE TRAGEDY A GREATER MYSTERY THAN EVER The Police are Puzzled, and Perplexed .[6]
THE CORONER'S FINDING. The Coroner said the case was one of those strange crimes which occasionally crop up and leave no loophole for the discovery of a motive. The verdict was "That each of the deceased, James Frackleton Holland and Hilda Marion Holland, died at Kaiapoi on or about Thursday, May 11, 1916, and that each of the deceased died from shock and hemorrhage or the brain, the result of injuries inflicted upon them, and that the injuries were inflicted upon each of them by some person or persons unknown to the Coroner."
