William H. Holland was an educator who served one term in the Texas Legislature.[1]
William was born about 1846. He was the son of Bird Holland.
William served with the US Colored Troops in the US Civil War. He was in the 2nd Regiment, United States Colored Cavalry. He was with Company G and later was Commissary Sergeant of the 16th U.S. Colored Infantry.[2][3][4]
In 1868 William was studying English at Oberlin College.[5] In the 1870 census William (age 27), Teacher, was in Portsmouth Ward 4, Scioto, Ohio.[6] He was still pursuing English studies in the 1870 Oberlin catalog.[7]
He lived in Texas, working as a teacher for a time in Austin. In the 1890 census William at the Texas Deaf, Dumb, and Blind Institute for Colored Youth in Austin, Travis, Texas, United States. He was the school's first superintendent.[8] He was a staunch Republican and served in the 15th Legislature, where he authored legislation creating Prairie View Normal, the first college for blacks in Texas and now Prairie View A&M University. His brother Milton was the first recipient of the Medal of Honor who was born in Texas.
William died in 1907 and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Travis County, Texas, United States.[9] His widow Eliza received a pension from his Civil War service.[10]
In 2018, Jeff Davis Avenue in Austin was renamed William H. Holland Avenue in his honor.[11]
