Merle Cooper Hollingsworth was born June 1, 1907 on the Chickasha Indian reservation in Oklahoma Territory just a few months before Oklahoma became a State on November 16, 1907.
He was raised in Texas and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1930 with a degree in Civil Engineering and a commission in the United States Army. Shortly after his graduation, in 1931, he married Mildred Elizabeth Barnard (from El Paso, Texas) and they began married life in San Antonio, Texas.
Lt. Col Hollingsworth was a highly decorated soldier who served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam during a career that spanned nearly 40 years of active service the Military. His specialty was civil engineering, building bases, airfields and other facilities throughout the world. In WWII he was assigned to the Army Air Corps building airbases to support the troops moving forward. Later on The United States Air Force was formed as a separate service unit and Lt. Col Hollingsworth migrated to the Air Force carrying on the same work in Korea and Vietnam.
