Biography

"He entered the Sophomore class at Middlebury College, Vt, in 1812, and graduated in 1816; took charge of the academy in Newcastle for one year, then entered the theological seminary at Andover, Mass., and went through the three years course; in 1820, was licensed and ordained by the presbytery of Londonderry, Vt.; went to Missouri under the direction of the Connecticut Missionary Society, and served that society until the spring of 1822; receiving an invitation from Danville, Vt., he became pastor of the church there, labored about three years, then lost his health and went to the South for the benefit of a milder climate, first to Charleston, S.C., thence to Buffalo Springs in southern Virginia, and thence, about 1829, to Oxford, Granville Co., N.C., and took charge of a large female seminary.

With improved health he tried to live in the West in 1834, but too much exposure on the prairies at Griggsville, Pike Co., Ill., brought sickness, and just then came an invitation from old southern friends, now living in West Tennessee, to take charge of a seminary for young ladies. So he spent seven years at Somerville, and La Grange, with such improvement of health as to justify another trial of the climate of Illinois.

He served under the American Home Missionary Society five years, and subsequently in an agency for the American Bible Society seven years. He married at Salem, now Danvers, Mass., Aug. 25, 1823, Mary Trumbull of that town, a cultivated lady who shared all his labors."
