Biography

By his second marriage, George had already embarked on what was to be a lifelong devotion to public service. His principal businesses were farming and selling real estate, but early in life he served also as supervisor of Rockton for four years and after that, as postmaster for seven years. He was treasurer of the township school funds for sixteen years. In 1875 he was appointed by Governor Beveridge of Illinois to a two-year term as State Commissioner of Public Charities, and in 1877 he was elected to the Illinois State Legislature.

From Hollister Family of America - "George Henry, son of Josiah Hollister and Phoebe Rich, was born in Marshfield, Vt., Dec. 13, 1821. He married 1st, Sept. 18, 1852, Flizabeth H., youngest daughter of Dea. Lumon and Almyra Pettibone of Rockton, Ill. She was born in Stockton, St. Lawrence Co., N.Y., Sept. 4, 1833, and died at Rockton, Ill., Sept. 30, 1860; 2d, Dec. 11, 1861, Fannie E., youngest daughter of Dr. Harley and Mary B. Hooker of Rockton, Ill. Fannie E. Hooker was born in Rochester, N.Y., Sept. 18, 1838.

George Henry Hollister removed from Vermont to Rockton, Ill., in 1850; was postmaster of that town for seven years, supervisor for four years, and has held the office of township treasurer of the school fund since 1861; was appointed state commissioner of public charities, but resigned that office in 1877, to accept the election to the State legislature, which office he held two years; has engaged in banking, money-loaning, manufacturing, and other business; resides in Rockton, Ill. He and his wife are members of the Congregational church of that place."
