By his second marriage, George had already embarked on what was to be a lifelong devotion to public service. His principal businesses were farming and selling real estate, but early in life he served also as supervisor of Rockton for four years and after that, as postmaster for seven years. He was treasurer of the township school funds for sixteen years. In 1875 he was appointed by Governor Beveridge of Illinois to a two-year term as State Commissioner of Public Charities, and in 1877 he was elected to the Illinois State Legislature.
