At the time of the 1880 Census, Joseph and his family were living in Maple Township, Iowa, just a mile or two due west of present-day Mapleton, Iowa. Joseph was attending school with three of his siblings while the two youngest stayed at home. Joseph's father was working as a farmer while his mother was at home with the house and children.[2]
Five years later, at the time of the 1885 Iowa State Census, little other info is given but this census does provide us with the county of birth for Joseph - Adams County, Iowa. Another interesting detail provided on this census is the fact that Joseph's father, Hiram, was able to vote, a right the United States had afforded to few residents.[3]
The 1895 Iowa State Census shows that Joseph is still living with his siblings and widowed mother in Woodbury County, Iowa. Joseph was able to vote and was also subjected to military duty. This census also contradicts the last available census in regards to the birth location of Joesph. Here, the location is listed as Pottawattamie County, Iowa.[4]
