Biography

Major Daniel Holloway was born in 1817 to James Holloway and Sarah Ellis Holloway in Virginia. He was named "Major" after his grandfather Holloway. The birth year of 1817 is based on census estimations. No exact date has been found.

On October 6, 1840, Major married Jane Penny in Wake Co., North Carolina. He was age 23. The couple began their married life living in Dutch, Granville Co., North Carolina. The 1850 Census lists Major (32), Jane (28) and children Samuel (8), Eliza (7), Charles (5), Alexander (4), John (2). Major's occupation is blacksmith.

The 1860 Census shows that the family has moved to the North Western District, Wake Co., North Carolina (Brassfields PO area). Major's father died in 1858 and it is thought that Major probably inherited land from his father which is why the family relocated. The family includes Major (43), Samuel (18), Helon (17), Alexander (13), John (11), William (9), Henrietta (7) and Willis (1). Family Deaths: Son Charles (15) is not listed and has likely died since the 1850 Census. Major's wife, Jane, died in August 1859 from typhoid fever. Sadly, it would appear that soon after the birth of son Willis, Jane contracted typhoid fever and died.

On April 26, 1866 Major Holloway married Elizabeth Ellen Cook of Wake Co., North Carolina. She was the daughter of Anderson Cheek. The couple were only married five months when Elizabeth died on September 21, 1866.

The 1870 Census lists Daniel with children: Helon (24), John (23), Henrietta (20), William (18) and Willis (13). Missing are 2nd wife Elizabeth, and sons Samuel and Charles. The family still resides in Oak Grove, Wake Co., NC.

Major Daniel Holloway died in September 1879 from bronchitis. His death is found on the Oak Grove, Wake Co., NC Census Mortality Schedule for the year ending May 1880. It indicates he is a widower at time of his death. Burial spot is unknown - though later mention found indicates the "family graveyard" wherever that may be. [1]
